What is FeeNIX
FeeNIX is an environment that provides resources for IT subject teaching. FeeNIX provides rapid deployment of teaching resources on dedicated infrastructure eliminating the need to install databases and web servers on lab or home computers.
FeeNIX is configured with one server for each resource, ie. the Oracle database server is running only the Oracle databases and likewise for MariaDB.
Students are given access to the resources based on the requirements for the unit. For example, a web development unit will typically be granted access to Mercury web and MariaDB.
Available Resources
Web hosting
The Apache webserver is available to Mercury users. This can be used for PHP websites with a database backend provided by MariaDB.
Databases
- MariaDB - Can be used standalone or in combination with Apache for web hosting.
- Oracle - Used for the teaching of database subjects such as Database Analysis and Design
Linux
Used for web hosting but can be used as a Linux teaching resource. It can also be used for programming in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python and PHP. The hostname for this server is 'Mercury'.
Electronic License Management System (ELMS)
Electronic License Management System (ELMS) portal provides an interface for eligible STEM students to obtain license codes and download media for:
- VMware products
- Microsoft (Azure Dev Tools for Teaching)
Usernames and Passwords
The Mercury (Linux) environment uses your SIMS credentials however the username must be prefixed with an 's' in front of your student ID.
The MariaDB and Oracle databases are not linked to your SIMS credentials and instead use locally stored passwords. This is to maintain the security of your SIMS credentials as the passwords can be stored in your configuration files which would form part of work submitted.
Password resets
SIMS passwords (used to login to Mercury) can be changed at https://passwordreset.swin.edu.au.
To reset the password of your MariaDB or Oracle database please call the IT Service Desk on (03) 9214 5000. Please note that password can only be reset over the phone.
Request access
Unit convenors can request FeeNIX resources by logging a service request using the form found at https://csm.swin.edu.au. FeeNIX resources are provisioned on a unit basis and must be requested for each teaching period.
