Mercury FAQ
What is my username?
A lowercase 's' followed by your student number.
What is my password?
The password for your Mercury account is your Swinburne Identity Management System (SIMS) password. This is the same as the Students Portal and email.
SIMS passwords can be changed at https://passwordreset.swin.edu.au.
Connecting to Mercury
Mercury is running the SSH service for both Terminal and File Transfer on port 22.
Terminal (Command Line)
You must connect via terminal atleast once so Mercury can create your web directory upon login.
On windows we recommend using PuTTY to connect and on macOS use the Terminal.
File Transfer
After logging in via SSH once your web directory structure will exist and you can file transfer to upload your code.
On windows we recommend using WinSCP to transfer files and on macOS use Cyberduck.
WinSCP and Cyberduck are free for students to download.
Client Instructions
Windows
PuTTY is a terminal emulator and SSH client for Windows. On Swinburne lab computers PuTTY will be installed.
For personal computers, it can be downloaded from here.
PuTTY details:
- Enter the Host Name of mercury.swin.edu.au
- Select the Protocol SSH
- Click Open
PuTTY will then prompt you for your username.
Be sure to include a lowercase 's' infront of your student number.
MacOS or Linux
Use Terminal for SSH connections.
ssh <username>@mercury.swin.edu.au
Be sure to include a lowercase 's' infront of your student number.
Connecting to Mercury from off campus
You must be using the Swinburne VPN client in order to connect to Mercury from off campus locations.
